State Budget Update
The recently adopted 2009-2010 New York State budget includes an additional $5.6 million in operating aid for public broadcasting. Total operating aid for 2009-2010 will be approximately $15 million.
While this level of funding still reflects a 20% reduction from the prior fiscal year, it is less onerous than the Governor's proposal to reduce station operating aid by 50% and very much appreciated particularly in these difficult fiscal times.
The 2009-2010 operating aid appropriation will enable New York's public broadcasting stations to produce, at some level, local broadcast programming and continue to offer core education programs and services.
To those of you who took an active role in our effort to secure additional funding, by writing and calling state legislators and the Governor, thank you. Your participation in the budget process through savenypbs.org considerably strengthened our outreach campaign, and in so doing, contributed immeasurably to our success.
